Though Nimble Fingers offers all of the typing exercises we evaluated in typing software, the program is basic and lacks pizzazz. There are a few timed challenge exercises, but no true games to earn and keep kids attention. For disciplined teens planning to sharpen typing skills without all the frills, this program is a good choice.
Because Nimble Fingers is basic, the program is quite simple to use. From the main menu, you select lessons, drills, practices, tests (and more) complete the assignment, then the ăLittle Professor points out patterns in your errors and suggests possible solutions—such as improving posture and insuring correct hand position to eliminate bottom-row mistakes.
The strength of Nimble Fingers is in its many drills and tests—there are literally hundreds, including a few exercises that are often overlooked, such as 10-key and financial typing practice.
This typing program also offers typing flashcards: you see a word—such as a state name—then after you begin typing the word disappears and you must complete it from memory. This is an often-overlooked method to build speed and accuracy.
You can download additional practice text from Prof Ware or add your own practice material—and that's a bonus because much of the tying text in this typing software is kind of dry.
The user options section is limited—you have a few sound options and can reset the password, but that's about all. Again, this is a simple program.
We didn't have any trouble installing Prof Ware's Nimble Fingers.
Nimble Fingers typing help files are limited to a brief online tutorial and an online FAQ section.
This typing program is chock-full of advice, drills and tests. This typing software is basic, with no animations, no visual rewards, but plenty of accurate, constructive criticism. If its drills you want, with Nimble Fingers, it's drills you'll get.
