The typing portion for this typing software is simple to use; you just pick a category (beginner, intermediate or advanced) and start typing whatever appears on the screen—simple. And FasType includes a freestyle typing mode where you can type whatever you want.
The customization options for this typing software are extensive compared to other typing programs. For computer novices, this might be intimidating at first.
Our conclusion: FasType is not designed to be used by younger children alone—kids will need supervision while setting up the program options. (Or, you could leave the default settings in place. That's the simplest choice.)
FasType has three levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. There are no true lessons, instead there are drills within each level and you do these with either one or two hands. Drills are timed; once the drill is complete, a window pops up with your timed results so these drills also act as tests.
This makes navigation simple because your child isn't bouncing between lessons, drills, and tests—in FasType all three are combined into one. But kids like to jump around, so using FasType to learn typing isn't as fun. Also, this typing software doesn't include any games—kids look forward to playing typing games. Also, this typing software didn't include any 10-key practice.
FasType was one of the most customizable typing programs we reviewed, however. But there were so many options that setting them was overwhelming.
We had no trouble setting up FasType.
FasType comes with one of the most extensive, easy to use help sections we found while reviewing typing software. We had no complaints and found all the information we wanted.
This typing software is basic—there are no games, and the drills, lessons and tests are all combined. But if your teenager likes to micro-customize typing drills, this may be the typing software for your family.
